Lebanon: Little Sama Overcomes Malnutrition

August 20, 2026

Three-year-old Sama (not her real name) from Beqaa is enjoying a healthy and active childhood once again after recovering from malnutrition. She had experienced significant weight loss, weakness, and low energy that caused her to withdraw from activities she once enjoyed. Her journey began during a routine community screening conducted through the French Initiative for Food Security and Nutrition (FIFSAN) and carried out by IOCC. The screening team identified signs of malnutrition and referred Sama to a healthcare center, where she received her diagnosis.

Then, Sama was enrolled in a treatment program, where she and her family received food supplements, nutrition education, food parcels, and support for transportation costs for follow-up visits. Over five months of treatment, Sama made remarkable progress and achieved full recovery. “When Sama was diagnosed, I felt helpless because I did not know how to help her,” her mother said. “Watching her become stronger with each visit and seeing her smile and play again brought joy back into our home. This program gave my daughter a second chance to grow up healthy, and for that I will always be grateful.”
